Stuck in a rut

Ever since Chanel's release of their nail colour Particuli√®re last year I have been addicted to similar copycat shades of brownish, muddy looking nail varnish. Wow...I make it sound so appealing! This particular one is one of my faves, it is belgravia by nails inc. I love the metallic sheen it has, the flash in the camera shows this pretty well

In different lights it has a purple edge to it, and also the metallic-ness of it creates a shine that stops my nails from looking plain dirty! As I said I am quite addicted to this colour group and have collected quite a few....

I am embarrassed to admit that this isn't even all of them, but nude/brown/purple-ish are definitely my favourite nails colours, and I wear them all year round...promise! I also seem to favour nails inc, this is definitely because their colour range is fantastic. I don't think the formula lasts any longer than other brands. I will always rate Barry M highly, Chanel on the other hand...seriously lasts about an hour without chipping on my nails. Rubbish!

Any collections of same-ish products that you guys are willing to admit to!?

Summer Holiday

I have just got back from an amazing two weeks in Portugal and thought I would share with you guys the all important make up items I took with me. A few of the products are quite new so I've thrown in some of my opinions too...

Eyes:
UD's Naked Palette-all the shadows I could need! But I couldn't resist also taking Bobbi Brown Crystal Eyes mostly for Peacock-the turquoise colour which I use as liner; this with loads of mascara creates an easy, summery evening eye.

I bought Maybelline's One by One Volume Express Waterproof mascara just before going away. Normally I hate waterproof mascara, but take it on holiday because of the heat and beach etc, so whilst browsing in Boots I settled on this one. Major fail. The main reason I don't use waterproof is because it is a nightmare to get off - not this one! It pretty much smudged down my face if I did wear it during the day, and of an evening it did that awful bitty fallout onto my cheeks. And lastly, it didn't even add much volume! I will not be repurchasing...

I also chucked in MAC coffee pencil liner and Urban Decay 24/7 liner in a plum colour, and Mac Rubenesque and primer potion for eye shadow bases.

Face:
I didn't bother with foundations; instead I just took a mix of
concealers that I either mixed with a bit of moisturiser or used just to cover blemishes. I finally jumped on the Collection 2000 bandwagon and bought the Lasting Perfection concealer - and yes the writing on the packaging has all worn off, mostly onto my hands/into my makeup bag...ideal. But the product is fab, v similar to the Lauder's Double Wear concealer. I took my MAC Select Cover-Up concealer in case I hated them but didn't need to use it. If anyone is wondering I bought number 2 light, and number 4 deep so that I could mix as my skin got more tanned, and seriously, if you haven't tried this product yet - go get it!

I also took my Mineralize Skinfinish Natural and face kit from MAC's last Xmas collection, blusher and bronzer in one makes it handy for travelling. I adore the Peachtwist blush; it is quite shimmery but looks fab with a tan.

Lips:
Pretty non-existent as I can never be bothered with lipstick on holiday. I took Bobbi Brown pink beige (no21) lipgloss for a nude lip, and then for a touch more colour; Bourjois 3D Effect gloss in 04 which is a glittery pink and Smashbox Heat-a pretty coral colour. I have to admit I got a bit bored of these though, and was glad I had benetint on me for a bit of a change!

Brushes:

Elf Powder Brush, Chanel face brush, Mac 168, Smashbox liner brush, No.7 eye shadow blend and contour brush, elf blending eye brush (I use it for concealer) and Benefit fluff shadow brush.

....I want to go back already!

Hope you are all having a lovely summer

Hauling it up

Here are a few of my recent purchases, all encouraged by the sales, a holiday coming up and the boredom of being at home after finishing my second year at uni. It has resulted in lots of shopping trips!

I have a bit of a bikini obsession and I really didn’t need any new ones this year, but I couldn’t resist....
Topshop (in the sale) £15.00

Warehouse (student discount was 20% when I bought this, yay for being a student!)
Top-£14   Bottoms-£14

Primark £8
I love the ruffles on the top of this, very cute and surprisingly flattering.
But this bikini has little bells on...very odd if you ask me, and these will be
getting the chop before I hit the beach!

Miss Selfridge denim dress, I think this will be perfect for V festival in august and it was only £15. The belt is from Massimo Dutti a while ago.

Lowther Wellies from amazon. Another purchase for V festival, and they are definitely a necessity, so I picked up a cheap pair for £20. I got navy just so I can wear whatever I want rather than trying to pick outfits that go with crazy pink floral wellies, which to be honest, I do really want!

I adore floral prints and when I saw this in Topshop I couldn’t resist. It is slightly cropped but I wore it with baggy-ish washed out denim shorts and a tan belt without showing too much skin for a casual day time outfit. I might dress it up on holiday with high waisted darker denim shorts and wedges.

River Island white skirt. I have since discovered this in the sale – very annoying! But I love it none the less, it is thin and light but not see through and looks fab with summery tops tucked in-I've paired it here with a River top too. I will probably change the belt to another plaited one as I think this one looks a bit cheap. This will be first in my suitcase as I still haven’t had the chance to wear it thanks to our rubbish weather and my pasty legs!

Another River purchase, big enough to hide behind on the beach. I love the fact that they have colourful frames, it makes a change from my usual black or brown framed sunglasses.

There is a huge lack of beauty products here as I have been trying to restrain myself because of my impending visit to duty free, and also a trip to New York in august so I’m hoping to splash out then. But even so, I miss buying makeup!

Hope you guys have had some success in the sales.

21 Candles

Yesterday was my best friend’s 21st birthday party and I have been on the hunt for a summery, smart/casual outfit to wear.

I have been coveting some palazzo pants for a while but not been brave enough to buy any for fear of looking like I’m wearing a tent rather than trousers. However I took the plunge in New Look recently and tried many a pair on and settled on these ones for £24.99 and I am actually really pleased with them. (However I warn you now - a few pairs did look like pyjama trousers, and when I came home proudly showing off my new purchase my brothers thought I had gone slightly mad. Definitely a fashion only understood by some of us girls!) Paired here with a Topshop vest and sandals it looks a bit like a maxi skirt but they are more practical as they don’t flow everywhere and are easier to walk in without treading on the ends. They are perfect for a summers evening and I think I’ll get a lot of wear out of them, especially on my summer holidays.

Top: Topshop
Trousers: New Look
Belt: h&m
Necklace: Topshop
Watch: Micheal Korrs
Ring: h&m

Happy 21st Luce and hope you have all had a lovely weekend

Backcomb Loving

I am a huge fan of crazy, big, backcombed hair but I hate hate hate attacking my poor hair with a comb and then having to wash it at the end of the night to avoid waking up with a birds nest. Surely combing upwards, in the wrong direction is bad for our tresses? So I usually just settled for flat-ish hair pretending I was aiming for a sleek look-ha! That was until I discovered this amazing product...

Umberto Giannini Glam Hair - Backcomb In A Bottle. I picked mine up at Boots for around £5

The only way to demonstrate it is with some really embarrassing photos - I wanted to give you guys a good idea of how it works so please excuse the awkward poses and cheesy grins!

Firstly I start with incredibly flat looking, just washed hair. Then I use my GHDs to straigten my hair and then curl it under as I get towards the bottom third. The waves give it a bit more movement and add to the volume. Then I spray individual sections with Backcomb In A Bottle.

Next I tip my head upside down and massage it into the roots, in the final picture here I have messed up my parting and set it with good old Elnett hairspray.

The product stays in pretty well, but I do use quite a lot of hairspray. It is also easy to scrunch the hair during the day to add more volume and the product that is already in the hair tends to hold it. It is quite versatile - I even use this when tying my hair up as it gives it more of a messy look. Best of all it is easy to brush and wash out, fabulous not waking up looking like Russell Brand after a night out ;)

June Favourites

One of my favourite kinds of posts because it is always good to have a product recommended from a months or more trial, right? So here are some of my product best friends from June.

Radox Shower Smoothies, Models Own Blooboo, Urban Decay all nighter,
Estee Lauder Double wear, Mac Rubenesque, John Freida 3-day straight and Garnier self tan gel.

Estee Lauder, Double Wear Foundation
Probably my all time favourite foundation, mostly because I have annoyingly oily skin and this stuff stays put. I always find myself running home to this foundation when I have attempted to branch out to newer products. In the summer months I generally use it mixed with an oil free moisturiser for a slightly lighter, more natural coverage. I always use ELF’s powder brush from their studio line to apply and at the moment am setting it with Mac’s MSF natural, nothing ground breaking here. Whether it is hot, cold or raining Double Wear stays on all day and for that reason it will remain in my make up bag for a long, long time.

Garnier No-streaks bronzer self tan gel
This is quite a new discovery that came recommended by my mum (always promising!) What is great about this fake tan is how quickly it dries. I normally decide last minute to slap on some colour, so this is good as I can honestly put on my pjs and go to bed five minutes after applying and it doesn’t transfer onto my sheets. The colour develops nicely too, normally two applications over two days gives me the tan I like. I can’t promise anything about the smell though; it does have the usual initial apricot-ish fake smell that turns weirder as it develops!

Urban Decay all nighter
I purchased Urban Decay's Urban Bride gift set after seeing Fleur mention it as I thought it was a great way to try out a couple of the products that I hadn’t used before. The star for me is the makeup setting spray, it is relatively new and I tried it on a few nights out last month. I found that it did help my foundation last longer than it normally does in hot, sweaty clubs (nice!). Normally I have to power a few times during the evening but my skin was definitely less shiny on all occasions. At first it felt weird spraying something wet onto my face having just spent a while doing my makeup-I have never been able to get my head round Fix Plus for this reason. But I braved it and was surprised that it dried in seconds, and I did not have water marks or eye makeup running down my face! I’m not sure how much this helps eye makeup to stay put, but UD’s Primer Potion does that for me anyway. So for now, this gets a big thumbs up!

Radox Shower Smoothies
Very random and quite boring to include a shower gel, but you will understand when you smell it, almost good enough to eat! Enough said.

MAC Rubenesque paint pot

With Satin Taupe (left) and
Sketch (right)
This has been a failsafe eye shadow for me over the last month, particularly because I have been doing work experience in London, so needed something to last all day without creasing, that wasn’t too bold but still pretty. It is really summery and works perfectly on my skin tone with some black gel eyeliner along my upper lash line and mascara. Only takes five minutes in the morning before leaving the house to jump on a boiling hot train and tube...perfect. Can also be glammed up after work, with some sketch or satin taupe eye shadow blended into the crease.

John Freida 3-day Straight
I didn’t realise how awesome this stuff is, or how much I relied on it until I went to stay with a friend for a few days and didn’t bother to take it with me. I generally wash my hair every other day so I can’t vouch for the three day part of this (I reckon if I did leave it this long, by day three my hair would need running over with the straightners again). The most amazing thing about the product is the finish it gives my hair, I spray it when my hair is wet, then rough dry before straightening and overall my hair feels much sleeker and looks shinier. It is also much easier to straighten, and takes less going over with my GHDs, which is great in the long run as it means less straightening and less heat on the poor split ends.

Models Own Blooboo
June means start of summer and therefore we can get away with crazy bright nail polish. This shade is quite similar to a Barry M one which I think is from their candy collection last year, however this is more vibrant and I think it goes on better, unlike some other Models Own which I have tried (although it definitely needs two coats). With a topcoat of Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri it is amazingly shiny. It is also a perfect toe colour for summer holidays.

And finally...on a different note I highly recommend giving Elissa Franceschi’s new album ‘Into the Light’ a listen. I hotly anticipated the release of this record throughout June and it has not disappointed. Very chilled out and perfect for summer, she is unsigned but very talented. Salt is my fave, recorded with her brother and You Me At Six front man Josh, let me know what you think :)

Hope you have a lovely week

hello, hello!

I finally did it...I have started a blog. I have decided to bore people, (other than my poor friends) about new products, fabulous products and other fun things-that is if anyone reads this. I love the beauty and fashion blogging community that has developed online and having spent the last year indulging in everyone else’s ponderings, I have decided to put my own out there. Gulp.

So if like me, you are a self confessed fashion and beauty junkie, and general shopaholic - we all need to have some fun, right? Follow, and find out how I spend my hard earned student loan. And that is about as serious as it gets.

More interesting posts to follow...I promise...
